Just a couple of weeks back in February, the Steinway Piano Gallery at 120 S. Washington St.in downtown Hinsdale experienced two accidents in the space of just three days. Two car drivers somehow jumped the curb and ended up crashing into the building. Despite the two accidents, the gallery continued with their operations as per normal. In fact, temporary doors were only being installed on Monday.

According to Sales Manager Diane Duncan, the very first incident took place on 21st February. When the crash occurred, she was inside the building. She heard a loud crash and felt the building shake. A man who was trying to park his car, ended up jumping the curb and hitting the building. She mentioned that there wasn’t too much damage done aside from some displaced bricks. However, just two days later on 23rd February, a similar scenario took place. This time, it caused even more damage to the building. “A customer was sitting at my desk purchasing a piano and we heard a huge bang and another car had hit the building,” she recalled.

The second incident saw the car went through the doors as the driver who was parking was close to one of the entrances. Thankfully, neither of the two drivers were injured. Fortunately, there were also no pedestrians in the area when the crash took place. The handmade pianos were not damaged either. “Glass was everywhere and took a little bit to get everything cleaned up,” she stated. She mentioned that this Steinway Piano Gallery in Hinsdale is one of eight galleries nationwide that is factory and corporately owned. The gallery holds approximately a total of fourty pianos, most of which being Steinways. They are hand-crafted and would usually take up to a year to build. Aside from these hand-crafted pianos, the shop also features Essex and Boston brands, which are designed by Steinway as well.

These accidents took place during the period when the business is heading into their busy piano recital season. During this peak period, quite a number of piano teachers use the gallery for student recitals. With the obvious damages done to the building, some people had queries as to what had happened. Diane indicated that the temporary doors would be used for a couple of months before new permanent doors are being installed. “We love it here in Hinsdale. Everyone comments on the beauty of the environment. We just didn’t expect it to be a drive-thru,” she said. For the full story, check it out here.
