Yamaha has just launched its new Silent Series range of pianos. These pianos feature models such as the compact grand, grand and upright. For the grand pianos, it ranges from the GC1 compact grand at 5’3”, up to the S6 handcrafted 6’11” professional. As for the uprights range, it comprises of the P116 at 116cm up to the handcrafted SU7 at 131cm.

In order to support the introduction of the new Silent Series, Yamaha has also gone a step further to create a new website dedicated to the silent piano. The website includes videos featuring international product specialist Bert Smorenburg. At the same time, the videos also explain the key benefits and technological advances of the latest models. “Yamaha’s latest SH Silent Piano offering marks a huge advance for private customers, schools, colleges and professional users alike. Players can now enjoy exceptional concert piano sound, ambience and touch on headphones, and practice at any time, night or day! We have been amazed by the reaction of professional pianists who, frankly, find it difficult to believe the quality of the ‘silent concert’ sound and touch, thanks to binaural sampling and the non-contact key sensor system,” explained Yamaha ‘s Leanne Barrell.

Pianists have the option of utilising headphones to play in silence, connecting the instruments to computers as well as enjoying a range of extra sounds from the onboard digital sound generator. These new models provide a change from ‘live’ acoustic playing to a more private, silent practice and rehearsal. This transition is possible mainly due to the binaural sampling techniques on upright and grand models, along with a series of hammer and key sensors on the grand pianos.

The binaural sampling techniques make full use of stereo microphones to help record the piano from the pianist’s perspective. The microphones are placed strategically in order to capture the natural sound and ambience that the pianist would have experience acoustically, enabling a 3D aural feel that provides the player on headphones to have a ‘real’ playing experience with detailed, dynamic and expansive sound. Yamaha has decided on this technique to assist in replicating the sound of the company’s flagship CFX concert grand piano.
