It is already the 21st century and technology is way off the hook. In fact, it is advancing so rapidly that even a computer you bought a year ago is now considered to be old. So how does Chad Fryling actually make use of the modern day technology? Well, he is bringing music lessons online. He started Web Academy of Music, which teaches students piano lessons over a live Internet connection.

How is it able to work? Firstly, the metronome is being replaced by an iPod Touch that keeps track of time time. As for the music sheets that were previously bind together, it has made way for pdf files, which are accessible from a laptop. The stern teacher recently launched the Web Academy of Music to provide online live piano lessons from a studio in his Burnaby home. All students are required to have a computer, Internet connection and their own keyboard wherever they may be. In other words, this is a win-win situation because both parties can save on the cost and time of travelling for lessons. Now, they can actually do it from the comfort of their homes. At the same time, this enables them to learn from a familiar setting and at their own pace.

For Chad, a jazz and classical musician as well as a longtime teacher, technology and piano have always been his passions. Hence, he feels that he has accomplished something by being able to combine the two together. He is hoping that this comfort and ease will be able to bring pianists back to the keyboard, and ideally, attract new students, who have difficulties getting across town just to attend private lessons in a home or music studio. “It’s easy to let your passion slide. This enables busy adults and young people to fit music into their lives,” Chad stated.

Some of the equipment that he has invested in includes a keyboard with a professional mic, an overhead video camera trained on the keys and a laptop with a built-in webcam. Technology has also enable Chad to add newer dimensions to his teaching. With the help of YouTube, he is able to demonstrate clearer examples. He has created an online recital site too, where students and other musicians can upload their own performances for evaluation sharing purposes. “There are so many resources online. You just have to get comfortable with the technology,” explained the piano teacher with a Bachelor of Music degree.
