There are many different types of pianos out there in the market. They can range from grand pianos to upright pianos to even digital pianos. However, what does it take for a piano to earn the right as a super piano? In fact, this piano did not just earn the right to be called a super piano, it was also said to be one of Australia’s greatest inventions and innovations of all time.

To designers, especially industrial designers, the attractiveness of piano is pretty easy to be determined. Basically what they are seeking for is a combination of fine furniture making with clear-cut mechanical functions in a perfect blend of left- and right-brain activities. A piano is essentially a wood-and-metal machine that emits sonic art. However, Australia-based Wayne Stuart had the intention to push that art even further. Hence, he decided to do something that few would dare to even try, and that is to re-design one of the most popular musical instruments in the world.

The resultant Stuart & Son piano, which was developed slightly more than a decade ago, features “14 extra keys, a fourth foot pedal, a slightly arching and longer soundboard and a new sound component that gives the piano enhanced dynamic range and clarity of tone.” Regardless of how the designers may feel about it, ultimately it is still the pianists who will be the ones playing it. Therefore, their feedback was still required to allow Wayne to know how they personally felt about it.

“Like switching from fine food to delicacy. There is no return once you have tasted heaven. Beautifully crafted, intelligently installed, with the strings and other hardware, grandiosely presented and sensitively resonant. The extra keys and fourth pedals act not only as twice the number of tools an Inspector Gadget could hope for, but its variations allow you to emulate any keyboard instrument you may desire—like the sound of an organ or the detail of a harpsichord or the clever talk of a forte piano,” exclaimed Vicky Yang, a concert pianist, after having her first experience with the acoustic piano, which she described as love at first sight.

Wayne’s piano design has also led to a spot in a recently-released book titled, Australia’s Greatest Inventions & Innovations, which was produced in conjunction with the Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum. This 200-page book highlights some of Oz’s best inventions, ranging from black box flight recorders to cochlear implants to disposable syringes, and even Wi-Fi.
