Learning to play the piano requires one to be focus and motivated. Another key element is to pay attention to the piano scores while playing the notes. This requires a certain degree of multi-tasking, which some might find challenging. However, if it is already challenging for some of us. How much tougher will it be for Luther Fuller, a twelve year old pianist who is blind?

According to the young pianist, once he gets to the piano, everything is alright. Unfortunately for him, he was blind since young, but this has not stop him at all from playing the piano. “I don’t feel that blindness impairs my musical ability at all,” he said. In fact, he was able to display good performances, so that he could advance to the Kansas University’s International Institute for Young Musicians, which is a summer academy for top young talents around the world.

His family first acquired an old piano for him when they noticed that he had an interest in playing his toy piano. “Not only that, but he just seemed to be making noises on everything,” said Brendy Latare, his mother.

Luther is set to take up two courses at the academy. The first features piano technology, while the other is about conducting. At the same time, he will be working with Scott McBride Smith, the director of the institute, who had previously worked with him. Scott admitted that the institute doesn’t have blind students on a regular basis, but he also mentioned that Luther wouldn’t be the first. To aid Luther in his learning, Scott intends to use Braille music. “My feeling is he sort of enjoys the challenge,” stated Scott.

The Braille music is not an easy way of learning to play the piano. In fact, it would not be possible to read and play simultaneously. Furthermore, it is not always readily available, according to Brendy. Normally, Luther would have to learn a measure or two at a time. For the full story, feel free to check it out here.
