Selling a second hand product would probably not fetch you an equivalent price that you bought it for. There are certain products that tend to depreciate much faster compared to others. One such product is the piano. In recent years, the value of used pianos, especially uprights, has plunged at quite a rapid rate. This has caused many users to discard or dispose of their pianos instead of selling or donating them.

Piano movers and dealers stated that piano users tend to dispose of their piano more often recently. They don’t even consider selling them off at a knocked down price or donating them to their friends or relatives. Piano movers in Philadelphia are now making more regular trips to the dump. In fact, they have already gotten used to dismantling pianos, selling their parts to other artists and even burning them to use as firewood. “We bust them up with a sledgehammer,” stated Jeffrey Harrington, the owner of Harrington Moving & Storage, which is based in Maplewood, New Jersey.

Pianos are made of over thousand moving parts. This means that if one chooses to repair a piano, it will not come at a cheap price. Furthermore, fixing a piano will require lengthy hours from a skilled technician. The sad part of it all is that such technicians are dwindling in numbers. In the United States, the cost of fixing a digital piano or portable keyboard can easily be in the range of a few hundred dollars. As for imported pianos, the price can go up to $3000. “Instead of spending hundreds or thousands to repair an old piano, you can buy a new one made in China that’s just as good, or you can buy a digital one that doesn’t need tuning and has all kinds of bells and whistles,” explained Larry Fine, the editor and publisher of Acoustic & Digital Piano Buyer.

With the growth of the Internet, websites such as eBay is capable of offering knocked down prices. This makes it quite a challenge to sell a used piano. The other problem is that transporting a piano from one location to another can easily cost hundreds of dollars. In other words, if you even considered donating it to someone, either party would have to fork out a few hundreds just for transportation alone. This is the reason why most people end up disposing their used pianos. For the full story, check it out here.
