Normally, pianists tend to be soloist as they would usually play their piano on their own. Yes, there are times when two individuals play together on the same piano, which can be quite fun actually. However, can you imagine five guys playing together on the same piano? Neither can we. Hence, when we came across “The Piano Guys” on YouTube, we were pleasantly surprised. Their piano cover of “What Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction gained 1.4 million hits in a mere space of two days. Seeing is believing, so you will have to check this one out yourself to believe it.
Impressed? So were we! Here’s the story behind the song. The idea first came about a few months back. All five of them were gathered around the piano for a video shoot scheduled for that day. Halfway through their brainstorm, one of them started to flick a piano string. As all of them are poster children for ADHD, they managed to develop a simple flick of a string into the banging of a beat, plucking of a string and hitting of keys.
Even making the song choice took them quite awhile. They were going through several choices before deciding that this would be the best choice for them. The factors that influenced their decision included how catchy the song was, and the fact that the music, lyrics and video were also family friendly. These five married men thought of it as a challenge to take on song that is performed by a teenage boy band. It brought them back to their childhood and they simply acted like kids again when they were playing the piano. Obviously, it worked to their advantage as they were able to earn so many views. At the same time, they were able to figure out new “techniques” of playing the piano unconventionally.
From the video, we can gladly say that the piano can be played in more than just one dimension. These five musicians were able to experiment with a traditional musical instrument and invent something that is modern. After playing around with the chords, they eventually managed to make it out in their favour.
